Gunn's at the Ready...

In a Project Runway first, fabulous mentor Tim Gunn was chosen to be the guest judge for the season's Bryant Park finale (cause who really needs J.Lo anyway? And foot injury...?) Kenley's basically screwed since she's been a complete bitch to Tim since day one. And by the way, Kennie, you're wedding dress did look like the McQueen.
First up was model castings, which to be honest, couldn't really get any more boring. But, did you see a few ANTM models pop up (Naima and Danielle) as well as PR season 1 favorite MORGANZA!!!! I love her...

So about the collections:
Kenley, who opened the show, claimed inspiration from "family...and Alice and Wonderland". Needless to say ropes- inspired by her daddy dearest's tugboat gig- and Alice and Wonderland don't really mix. I couldn't really see Alice in Wonderland either, unless you count that neon pink and black striped skirt, which truthfully looked more like a poseur punk teen who fell from the 80's. Another dress, the painted number, also bore a close resemblence to a Balenciaga dress...you know people go to jail for stuff like this.

Korto was next to show with her African tribal wear. It wasn't bad, but it was all the same really. We get you're from Africa. Really. And we're proud for you that you escaped genocide and crap, but find something new. Travel abroad. Go to Europe. Asia. Guam. Anywhere but AFRICA!!!

Leanne, the tree hugging Portland native, closed the show with a simple yet AMAZING show. Death Cab-esque music pounding through the speakers, she showed off her sleek, wavy collection of oceanic neutrals. I hope she blows the other two out of the water (bad pun, I know) and takes home the prize! And obviously that online poll thingy Bravo does shares my opinion.

Anti Fashion Show!

Friday night we will be attending this event, and covering it for an article in Bleach Magazine.

PRESENT:

"Friday - 17th - Anti-Fashion Show, Admission $10 (9pm)
The Anti-Fashion Show is a collaboration between Iris Billiter of Irisewn Design and Cheryl Carlson of Karma Rags, both located here at The Flying Monkey Arts Center. The show takes place on Friday, October 17th at 9 PM at The Flying Monkey Arts Center Theatre. A reception will follow where guests can relax and see featured work up close, select items to purchase, and place orders with designers.

Anti-fashion can mean many things. In this case it means gathering the work of local DIY [do-it-yourself] designers, plus vintage clothing and vintage blend clothing, then showcasing it in a dramatic runway show with music and incredible atmosphere. Anti-fashion is imaginative, dramatic and defies mainstream fashion ideals.

Do-It-Yourself designers take old clothing or discarded materials such as rubber or plastic and create new, exciting, and more relevant clothing. Our featured DIY designer is Iris Billiter who will present 10 new couture works created from vintage clothing originally offered in Karma Rags. Iris Billiter has created several other lines of dramatic DIY fashion and is well-known for her edgy runway shows. Other highly talented local DIY clothing artists will also present significant current works that will prove exciting in style and demonstrate excellence in design and craftsmanship.

Vintage and Vintage Blend features the unrivaled construction, timeless style and creativity of older clothing by presenting it in a contemporary setting. The clothing in this portion of the show will be directly from the floor of Karma Rags and is ready to wear. Vintage clothing, when well-crafted and designed, never goes out of fashion. Vintage blend, a more relaxed way of wearing vintage, mixes eras and can range from a flouncy frilly 1950's dress with combat boots to an early 1970's pointed collar shirt with new jeans. Many of the vintage and vintage blend pieces will be available for purchase.

Attending The Anti-Fashion Show is an important step you can take in re-considering how you view fashion. Anti-fashion is rebellious, sustainable, and challenges the way society has influenced our clothing selection. Anti-fashion aims to create a higher degree of individuality in how we cover ourselves and moves us to be more thoughtful about the resources, both human and non-human, that’s required in making mass-produced clothing. Anti-fashion is accessible, incredibly fun, and anyone can do it!

Proceeds will benefit Sister-To-Sister, a local grassroots non profit mentoring and small loan entity, which provides no interest loans to low income working women in the Huntsville community. Past loans have included funds for rent, school tuition and books, ultra sounds, appliances, utilities, uniforms, dental and health care, car repair and eye glasses. In addition to loans, Sister to Sister provides community information and referrals, support and employment, and educational advice and assistance.
